Discover online shopping trends in Spain in 2023

Nov 29, 2023

2023 has been a revolutionary year for e-commerce in Spain, a year that has redefined how we buy, sell, and think about the online world. As we prepare to say goodbye to this year full of innovations and changes, it is the perfect time to dive into the trends that have shaped the way we shop online.

In this article, we will highlight some of the key findings about online consumer habits in Spain during 2023, based on InPost's recent study, conducted by Psyma:

1. Showrooming and Webrooming

Consumer behavior in 2023 reveals an interesting interplay between physical and online stores. The study shows that 64.5% of respondents practice showrooming, that is, they see products in physical stores but ultimately buy them online. This trend is particularly notable among young people aged 25 to 34.

On the other hand, webrooming, which involves researching products online before buying them in a physical store, is also a common practice. 77.1% of study participants indicated that they follow this approach, being more frequent in people under 45 years old. These shopping patterns highlight the importance of a multichannel sales strategy, where physical and online stores complement each other to improve the consumer experience.

2. The rise of pickup points

This year, there is a growing trend toward looking for faster and more flexible delivery options. Consumers value the ability to choose between several delivery options, including home delivery, delivery at the workplace, or at conveniently located pickup points. Among the factors that influence the decision on the shipping method are: shipping costs, delivery speed, and the convenience of home delivery. Shipping costs are the crucial factor for respondents (88% of respondents consider it very important).

Logistics is an essential component of e-commerce success, and pickup points are emerging as a revolutionary solution in Spain. 69% say they have used at some point a pickup point/locker for order delivery. These points offer a convenient alternative to traditional home deliveries, allowing customers to collect their packages at nearby locations and at their convenience, paying less for shipping. Nearly half of users (48%) are very satisfied with these services.

3. Sustainability: a priority in online shopping

Sustainability has become a priority for consumers and businesses alike. In 2023, we observed a growing focus on more sustainable e-commerce practices, from production to delivery. The environmental impact of deliveries is considered very or fairly important by 2 out of 3 respondents (65.7%).

Consumers are increasingly interested in buying products from companies that demonstrate a commitment to the environment. But 70% believe they would not pay higher shipping costs for a more environmentally friendly delivery, so the delivery option through Punto Pack could be a solution.

The future of e-commerce in Spain is taking shape with emerging trends that promise to revolutionize the way we interact and shop online. One of these trends is the integration of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). These technologies are transforming the shopping experience, offering consumers the possibility of visualizing products in a virtual environment. From virtually trying on clothes to visualizing how a piece of furniture would look in their home, AR and VR are closing the gap between online and in-store shopping experiences.

Another notable trend is the rise of conversational commerce and chatbots powered by artificial intelligence. These systems are improving the customer experience by providing quick and personalized responses, as well as helping companies gather valuable data about consumer preferences and behaviors. This conversational approach is enriching customer-company interaction, making online transactions more efficient and appealing.
