Types of logistics operators: 1PL, 2PL, 3PL, 4PL and 5PL

Having a good product is only the beginning. If you want it to arrive on time, in good condition, and with an outstanding customer experience… that’s where logistics comes into play.

But not all companies manage their shipments the same way. Depending on the level of outsourcing, there are different logistics models: 1PL, 2PL, 3PL, 4PL and even 5PL. Do these terms sound familiar? Here we explain them with clear examples.

What are 1PL, 2PL, 3PL, 4PL and 5PL?

These models differ in the degree of control the company keeps over its logistics and the number of processes it decides to outsource.

1PL (First Party Logistics): You do everything

This model represents the company that manages its logistics completely: it stores, prepares orders and delivers them to the customer. It does not outsource any process.

2PL (Second Party Logistics): You outsource only the transport

Here, the company continues to control warehousing and order preparation, but subcontracts a carrier to carry out the delivery.

Example: An online store packages its products and then hands them over to a parcel delivery company so it can distribute them.

3PL (Third Party Logistics): You outsource operational logistics

The 3PL model is one of the most widely used in e-commerce. It consists of delegating part or all of the logistics operations to a specialized external provider. This can include product storage, order preparation (picking and packing), transport, and returns management.

Example: an online store hires a logistics provider that takes care of storing stock, preparing orders, and coordinating their delivery with last-mile operators, as well as managing returns automatically.

4PL (Fourth Party Logistics): You also outsource the strategy

A 4PL provider does not limit itself to carrying out logistics tasks, but assumes complete control of the supply chain. It acts as a strategic intermediary between your company and the different logistics operators (such as several 3PLs), planning, coordinating, and optimizing each stage of the process.

Example: a company that sells in several countries hires a 4PL provider that takes care of coordinating different warehouses, carriers, and distribution platforms, choosing the best provider in each case according to costs, lead times, or geographic area.

5PL (Fifth Party Logistics): Full automation and digital focus

The 5PL model takes logistics outsourcing to the next level. It is based on digital platforms that integrate the entire supply chain, from planning to execution, with 100% automated management.

Example: a digital company that sells on several international marketplaces and manages its logistics through a technological solution that connects operators, warehouses, and carriers automatically and globally.
