Visual picking: how it works and why it is key to the logistics future

The visual picking or pick by vision is an advanced way of preparing orders using smart glasses with augmented reality. Instead of relying only on paper, screens, or carts with labels, operators use smart glasses with augmented reality (AR) to see instructions directly in their field of vision, overlaid: arrows, locations, quantities.

The idea is simple: reduce the time lost searching for products, avoid errors, and make the picking process more intuitive. Although it is not yet widespread, its potential is attracting interest among logistics leaders.

How it works: smart glasses, operational steps, and associated technologies

These are the typical steps an operator follows with a visual picking system:

  1. The system sends the picking order to the device (AR glasses).
  2. The glasses show the optimal route through the aisles to the product location.
  3. Once in the area, they visually indicate the exact shelf, level, or compartment that contains the item.
  4. When the item is picked, the operator confirms it in the visual interface and the system automatically updates inventory.
  5. The process continues until the entire order is completed.

For this to work, technologies such as:

  • ARKit / ARCore
  • Indoor geolocation and 3D warehouse mapping
  • Connection with the WMS system (Warehouse Management System)
  • Positioning sensors and real-time synchronization

Implementing visual picking brings tangible benefits:

  • Constant updating: layout changes, relocations, warehouse growth.
  • Hardware maintenance: optical elements, calibrations, failures.
