Fragile shipping: How to send works of art and paintings?

One of the most common doubts that arise when sending products is what to do with those products that are more fragile. Especially relevant is everything related to the shipping of paintings, pictures, or works of art in general. We are going to try to shed some light on this.

Steps to send a painting or picture

If there is one thing that stands out about sending a picture, it is its fragility, weight, and value. For all these reasons, it is considered a special shipment that requires specific measures.

1.Declare the value of the work of art

This step is especially important, especially regarding customs procedures and everything related to shipping insurance. In case of loss or damage to the packages, the insurance will cover it based on the declared value of the package.

This goes hand in hand with another tip: take out insurance for the value of the picture. You won't want to get into trouble in case it is lost. And although it may mean a small extra cost in shipping, we assure you it is worth it.

2. Pack it well!

This point is vitally important. During the shipping process a package can suffer damage resulting from transport, storage, etc. To avoid the damage being too great, make sure the packaging is as good as possible.

Different types of packaging should be used depending on the material the frame is made of, whether it has glass or not, etc. At InPost we recommend that you do not skimp on packaging material; use as much as you need.

3. Label the package correctly

As we always remind you, the label is the package's ID card. If you do not label it correctly, it will be harder for the handlers to identify where they need to deliver it. And, moreover, you will avoid having to suffer delays in delivery.

Our recommendation is that you place a label inside the packaging itself and, once you have packed it, also place another one on the outside. And remember: make sure the label is visible.

For shipments of pictures or works of art, and in general, for any fragile shipment, we also recommend placing a sticker indicating that it is a fragile product. This helps ensure that when it is handled, it is done correctly.

Packaging tips for sending a picture

For us, the most important point is that the packaging is as good as possible. Some things you should keep in mind:

– Protect the glass: without a doubt, it is the most fragile part, which is why you must take special care with the glass. The first thing is to place adhesive tape in an X shape, so that vibrations do not crack it. After this, you should place a sheet of cork or corrugated cardboard.

– Do not skimp on bubble wrap: bubble wrap is very inexpensive and can save your picture. Make sure to wrap it very well.

– Use packing paper to cover it entirely and seal with packing tape; a couple of turns should be enough.
